So, I finally took the plunge and joined Facebook.
Facebook has showed that my friends are annoying as hell..
One of them is a chronic poster of "funny" memes. (10 or 20 a day), the other is complete food snob, talking about the delicacies he ate on he previous meal, the other posts as soon her baby sneezes, the other re-sends the same "funny" memes as friend #1, the other one posts every single song that he listens on spotify, the other "check in" in every single place he steps foot it...

That's the key statement right there I think...Facebook is not the problem, it sounds like you just got sucky friends!
I have FB contacts that are annoying too but the positives of FB far outweigh the negatives. I have family/friends spread all over the place and FB has so far been amazing to keep up with them, organize events, and share info easily. It can also be a nice distraction while at work!

Have you even thoroughly explored Facebook's settings? You can always choose to not have news feed from any of your friends (or only the most important ones).
I had a contact who for an entire summer only posted two things everyday:
1. Just woke up (no later than 9:00am)
2. I'm going to bed (usually after 8:00pm)
There are others who simply think of themselves as muses of inspiration and repost songs; others whine about the world around them; others just gossip; others speak about people indirectly (and that person my not even see the update), but most of the time, we just share funny stuff (memes in particular).
As for me, I like using Facebook as a blog: it's a place where I post my opinion regarding sensitive issues (politics, religion, etc.), where I post sudden and random thoughts, etc. Any one who doesn't like seeing what I post is welcome to either un-friend me or block out whatever I post. Simple, though to be honest, if anyone does un-friend due to differences in opinions, I pity them when they are out in the real world and find that the world outside Facebook is just as diverse.

Good luck - LOL - I don't understand Facebook.
I joined to see what it was all about and within a week two dozen people I didn't know wanted to be my "friend." - it was all too needy to me.
So I tried to resign, but that's not easy. They said, with some reluctance I thought, they would accept my decision but would keep my username and password available for me for six months in case I changed my mind.
Then lo - more than a year later I got an email to say that "someone" had reactivated my page. It's still there, basically unused by me, but there is all sorts of information I don't want from other people.

Agreed. Got quite a bit of contacts that I can't keep in touch with otherwise. And also a great source of laughs when I log in. Lots of great shared laughter.

Just go on once or twice a week to see if any long lost friends want to contact you. And block platform apps. Do those 2 things and you have the pros of FB without the cons IMO

And that the worse part!! i have figured that our. FB has shown me how annoying they are. My foodie friend.. awesome person, i have always known the he likes good food. That great. He sound so snobbish and so needy.. makes me rethink my desire to be friends with him

Yuck! That would turn me off him immediately as well...but then I would just simply un-friend him and problem solved!

Works as well. I see FB as just another tool...some use the phone, some use e-mail, some do face to face, some do FB. I usually use a combination of all of the above!

Most notable example: Farmville.
Basically games, quizzes, and other pointless applications that people spam you with. To block them, as soon as you receive an invite, decline it. The option will then appear to either block invites from the person or block the entire app.

Its great for keeping up with far away friends and family. My job keeps me from getting on the road much so it works great for talking to people that I otherwise wouldn't have chance to. I had been getting a lot of the annoying applications and notifications, but if you look around long enough you can usually block most of them. I think its great.

Well yeah I guess. If he uses FB strictly for communication like I did, he might want to block all apps instead of blocking them individually. Just a suggestion...

I met one of my brothers on Facebook. I'm 40 and he's in his mid 50s. My dad had another family and I had only met one of my brothers once. It took FB to put me in contact with my other brother and now I'm good FB friends with him and his wife. That alone makes FB very important to me.
I really enjoy it for keeping up with friends all over the world. Yeah, you get some friends who have political views that don't mesh with yours, and I unfriended a couple of people because of that. Blocking things like FarmVille is a must because otherwise it'd drive you crazy.
So give it a chance and figure out how to filter what you're seeing to your tastes and you might just get some enjoyment out of it.
