Did the US Government ever own a share of Northwest Orient (or any other airline)? And did the airline fly to Europe under this name? Just curious.

Cheers!!

During the period before the deregulation of the airline industry many of the majors got subsidies I think, but I am pretty sure they were not owned in any way by the U.S. government.

When Northwest was known as "Northwest Orient Airlines", they flew all over the world. The word "orient" was used to reflect the fact that Northwest Airlines was a truly global airline.

Well some NWA planes also have a US at the end of the reg., i.e. N670US (which used to be the 744 World Plane).

in the late 80's/early 90's the state of Minnesota bought some of their debt to keep them headquartered in Minneapolis... so in that sense that are state owned.

A good number of the US Airways fleet has the tag US on the end as well. I assure you that doesn't mean they are owned by the government.

Also, a state forgiving debt does not make the company state owned unless it was actually an agreement to purchase a piece of the airline. NW is a publicly owned company. Anyone with stock owns a piece of the company.

DLX is correct in this matter. I'm from Minn. and all we did was get them out of debt and stop it from going bankrupt. In return they kept all these great jobs and the hub in Minn.basically the state saved the airline, but we don't own the airline.
