I was working out in the yard yesterday (4/24) at my place outside PVD when to my surprise I saw an MD-11 (white colored, probably World Airways)climbing out. Anyone know why we were so graced with this surprise widebody?

PVD757: Question for you. Does the RIAC keep a photo history of all the different aircraft types/airlines that have visited T.F Green Airport over the years, especially since the new terminal has been built? Have any 747s ever appeared at PVD, other than Air Force One, whether it be a charter or diversion? Just curious.

We had two World Airways MD-11s in BOS both on Saturday and Sunday....

ONE was an ex-DL MD-11 still with original nose cone!  Smile

Any idea what those were up to?

Those flights were returning cruise ship passengers from SJU and MIA. Aviation Solutions had a total of 4 flights this past weekend ( 3 to BOS and 1 to PVD). The ex-DL a/c was N801DE and will be returned to DL at the end of June.

Was the PVD charter to/from MIA or SJU? AND did it fly NON-stop from PVD with a full load on 4/17?

A Virgin Atlantic 747-400 once diverted to PVD, because of bad weather at either JFK or EWR (Can't remember which..?) And I am sure there have been others over the years...
Might have been this past winter, or the year before.

The a/c to PVD was from SJU with 371 passengers and a 93,500 pound payload.

Yes, to and from flights on both last Sunday and this past were n/s PVD-SJU-PVD. Even if you consider full loads on either leg, PVD-SJU is really only about 1/3 of the MD-11s max range. I witnessed the t/o on the morning of the 17th and it was up in about 5000 feet. With 2000' remaining, that's about an average takeoff roll here at Providence for a jet, a heavy one or not.

Yes, the outbound PVD-SJU was nonstop with the above stated weights (thanks Clipper). I am not aware of any Virgin America 747 ever diverting to PVD and I've been working here for almost 9 years now. A DL 763 (NCE-JFK) and an AA 762 (BRU-JFK) both diverted here in the past. A Tower Air 747 is the only 747 besides AF1 that I know of ever doing anything here (in the last 9 years anyway). It was a college sports charter from what I remember in the late 90's/early 2000's (roughly). The World MD-11 was contract flying for Royal Carribean Cruises during the busy school vacation week. World's MD-11 visited last year or the year before when they brought in the Buffalo Bills to get beat up by the Pats!

As far as the airport having pictures, the answer would be no. I know of a yahoo group where PVD devotees have captured images of any "significant" flying object that has ever been at PVD.

I'm surprised PVD doesn't see MORE widebodies, to be honest. The market is obviously there. IF a FULL MD-11 has no problem with weight to SJU off a 7200 foot runway, then a 763 would certainly not be a problem on a daily PVD-LAX, for instance. Has US Airways' A330 ever made a test run or diverted to PVD? Doesn't FEdEx or UPS bring in a widebody on occasion?

John:

No US 330, the only A33o that has ever been to PVD was Air Luxor's A330-200. UPS has brought in A300s occasionally and DC-8s every December. FEDEX hasn't done too much outside the 72S's. PVD has yet to see a 777, A318, CR9, or an A340. DL finally brought in a 764 for the Pats this past year closing out the entire 767 family. We've had NW 753s in a couple times now and a couple of Airtran diversions gave us the 717 too.
